Day 273 - Anyone

She had a choice it lay agape
Some voices from her past lurked on her answer-machine tape
She made her choice, she folded clothes
Stuffed them in a suitcase, and left a kindly note
It said “I know that this is made of paper and so it’s pointless I suppose, but I’ve just nipped out for milk, oh, and I’ve set fire to the house, try not to make a mess, see you around” and she found herself the open road.

For a while it was touch and go
It was clear she had a motive but she had no other home
She thumbed a lift and headed south

A fabricated story started leaking out her mouth, well now she could be anyone, a test-tube kid, a sultan’s son, a demi-god, a circus clown, a mayor who has just skipped town, well now she could be anyone

Sometimes I think about who we’re meant to be.

And sometimes I don’t.

A double life, and a dozen more
Was how she saw her days out, a tapestry performed
She soon forgot her real name
Or where the hell she came from again
Her life became a palimpsest each layer covered up the next, she had the most amazing fun, she really could be anyone, a test-tube kid, a sultan’s son, a demi-god, a circus clown, a mayor who has just skipped town, a chump singing some nonsense in a bedroom in a house

Sometimes I think about who we’re meant to be.

But most of the time I don’t.

On ‘milestone’ days I normally put in a bit more effort, or I moved things around if I felt like it. So on these milestones during this year I’ve sometimes gone back to see what song I put out there exactly a year ago.

It turns out this song, “Anyone”, was my effort last year to finish off September and to make it to three quarters of the the way through the project. The vocals are reasonably atrocious, but I’m kind of OK with this one as far as lyrics go.
